Tanzania seeks lasting gains from IPU assembly

Dodoma. Tanzania is seeking to turn the diplomatic and economic benefits of hosting the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly into lasting opportunities, with MPs urging the government to build on the international exposure and business prospects generated by the meeting.

Held in Arusha from October 5 to 9, the assembly brought together 2,044 participants from more than 150 countries, providing an opportunity to strengthen parliamentary relations and promote Tanzania as a destination for international conferences.

Presenting a parliamentary resolution on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Mtama MP Nape Moses Nnauye said hosting the meeting had demonstrated Tanzania’s ability to organise major international events.

It was the first time Tanzania had hosted the assembly since the IPU was established in 1889. Participants included 56 parliamentary speakers, 51 deputy speakers and 624 lawmakers.

Mr Nnauye said the gathering had created opportunities for closer relations between Tanzania’s Parliament and legislatures worldwide, while exposing delegates to the country’s tourism attractions and hospitality.

He called for sustained efforts to position Arusha as a centre for international conferences, tourism and diplomatic engagements.

The meeting also generated business for hotels, transport operators, airlines, food vendors and other small businesses.

Discussions covered human rights, climate change, disability inclusion and the impact of artificial intelligence on employment. The resulting Arusha Communique emphasised inclusive governance, public participation, trust and equal opportunities.

“The value of democracy is not measured only by the existence of institutions, but also by how those institutions improve people’s lives,” Mr Nnauye told Parliament.

Bunda Urban MP Esther Bulaya said the meeting had demonstrated Tanzania’s commitment to peace, stability and good governance, helping challenge negative perceptions about the country.

“Seeing is believing. The world has seen and believed that Tanzania is a respected nation, founded on peace and stability and committed to good governance,” she said.

Ms Bulaya credited President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s diplomatic leadership, particularly her support for Dr Tulia Ackson’s election as the first African woman to lead the IPU.

She said hosting hundreds of parliamentary leaders and delegates had required effective security and institutional coordination.

Arusha MP Paul Makonda urged the government to build on the meeting’s economic benefits, saying local businesses had gained from the arrival of international delegates.

Motorcycle taxi operators, food vendors, hotel owners and tourism businesses were among those who benefited, he said.

“We are asking the government to continue choosing Arusha as a centre for international conferences,” he said.

Mr Makonda said the success of such gatherings should be measured not only by attendance but also by their contribution to local businesses, employment, infrastructure and tourism.

He cited Thailand as an example, referring to a 2025 report indicating that the country generated 38 billion from international conferences and conventions. The currency was not specified in his remarks.

Mr Makonda said plans to construct a 5,000-seat international conference centre in Arusha could help Tanzania attract larger events and compete in the global meetings industry.

Kisarawe MP Suleiman Jafo also praised President Samia’s leadership, saying the assembly and Dr Ackson’s role in the international parliamentary community were sources of national pride.

“Tanzania hosting that meeting was not an act of charity; it was the result of our leader’s leadership,” he said, urging Parliament to recognise the President’s contribution.

Mr Jafo said the country’s growing international recognition justified the parliamentary resolution.

Mr Makonda also commended Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu, Dr Ackson and the organising team for their roles in preparing and delivering the meeting, while praising security agencies for maintaining peace throughout the event.
