How unseen eye problems hold back Tanzanian schoolchildren

Dar es Salaam. Thousands of bright children across Tanzania are falling behind in school, repeating classes, or being mislabelled as slow learners, not due to a lack of intelligence, but because they simply cannot see the blackboard, experts have revealed.

As the country approached World Sight Day on October 8, 2026 health experts issued an urgent alert: uncorrected vision impairments are silently derailing the education and future earning potential of young students across the nation.

Education specialists stress that roughly 80 percent of learning in a classroom is visual. Children are expected to read text, copy notes and follow instructions displayed at a distance.

However, uncorrected refractive error remains the leading cause of vision impairment among children. When a child’s vision is blurred, their struggle to keep up is often misunde

“A child who can’t see the board can easily be mistaken for a child who isn’t learning,” warns Programmes Director at CharityVision International, Anadine Marshall. “A simple vision screening can identify a problem that might.

Without early identification, affected children risk falling behind early, repeating academic years, losing confidence, or dropping out of the education system altogether.

The consequences of undetected eye conditions are evident in the lives of ordinary Tanzanian students. Sixteen-year-old Ahmed Ally from Zanzibar lived for years with undiagnosed high myopia, seeing the world beyond his reach as a blur.

Struggling to read the board, he repeated several classes before a visiting school screening team finally tested his eyes and provided a prescription.

Similarly, eight-year-old Consolatha David, who dreams of becoming a doctor, faced the prospect of staying home because her family could not afford eye care. Her situation changed only when the SightBuddies school screening programme visited Chibelela Sokoine Primary School, providing her with free glasses.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Health has recognised child eye care as a national health priority, incorporating it into the Integrated Management of Newborn and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) strategy in 2019.

Since then, over 3,500 primary health care workers have been trained. Ministry data indicates these workers examine an average of 5.8 million children annually, identifying nearly 250,000 children with eye problems every year.

Health advocates stress that this immense figure underscores an urgent need for systematic follow-up care and routine checks directly where children spend their days: in school classrooms.

The benefits of early intervention extend far beyond the classroom. Data from the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) reveals that identifying a child’s vision problem at age five and correcting it with quality glasses through age 18 can increase their lifetime earnings by 124 percent—effectively doubling their income potential.

Chief Executive of the IAPB, Dr Peter Holland, highlighted that a simple eye test and glasses “could be one of the best investments a parent can make for their child’s future,” calling on governments to guarantee universal access to sight tests.

Technical Director for Inclusive Health at Sightsavers, Sumrana Yasmin, echoed this sentiment, stating that investing in eye care is about “unlocking potential, transforming lives and ensuring no child is left behind”.

To prevent thousands of children from slipping through the cracks, experts are advocating for frequent, routine vision screening in primary schools. Programmes such as CharityVision’s SightBuddies demonstrate how classroom-based care delivers vital services directly to low-income families.

“By reaching children at school and providing glasses when they need them, we can remove a simple barrier that can make an enormous difference in their education, confidence and future,” Marshall emphasised.

Health leaders urge parents, teachers and policymakers to prioritise regular eye screenings, ensuring every Tanzanian child has the clarity of vision needed to fulfill their potential.
