New genetic test tackles repeated pregnancy loss

Dar es Salaam. Couples struggling with recurrent pregnancy loss or repeated fertility treatment failures now have a renewed hope following the introduction of advanced genetic testing technology in Tanzania that detects chromosomal abnormalities in embryos prior to uterine implantation.

The procedure, scientifically known as Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A), examines the full chromosomal makeup of embryos created through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

The advanced diagnostic technique enables fertility specialists to identify and select embryos containing the correct number of chromosomes before transfer, significantly improving the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Speaking over the weekend Nu Life Fertility Centre director Mr Ratheen Rawal said the facility is continuously leveraging cutting-edge advancements in reproductive technology to address complex infertility challenges facing Tanzanian couples.

He noted that by collaborating closely with medical experts, the centre ensures modern, world-class fertility care is readily available within the country. This strategic approach enables local families to access specialized reproductive medical solutions without incurring the exorbitant financial and emotional burdens associated with traveling overseas for treatment.

Chromosomal abnormalities are widely recognized as one of the primary drivers of spontaneous miscarriages occurring within the first trimester of pregnancy. Furthermore, missing or extra chromosomes in an embryo can lead to severe genetic conditions, including Down syndrome and Turner syndrome.

Elaborating on the clinical application, Nu Life Fertility Centre medical specialist Dr Sheila Ramadhani explained that PGT-A testing is performed after a woman’s eggs are fertilized with sperm in an IVF laboratory to form embryos, but strictly before any embryo is transferred into the womb.

“Some couples experience the distress of two or three successive pregnancy losses, while others fail to achieve pregnancy despite undergoing multiple traditional fertility treatments,” Dr Ramadhani explained.

She added, “In many of these complex cases, underlying chromosomal abnormalities are the hidden root cause of the problem.” Dr Ramadhani said that the screening provides doctors with crucial data to make well-informed decisions when selecting the healthiest embryo for transfer, particularly for patients with a documented history of recurrent miscarriages or recurrent implantation failures.

Explaining the laboratory procedure, the center’s Medical Director, Dr Madhav Hiran, noted that the process involves extracting a tiny, precise sample of cells from the outer layer of an embryo that has developed to the blastocyst stage a developmental milestone typically reached on the fifth day after fertilization.

“Once the embryos reach the blastocyst stage, we carefully remove three to four cells from the outer cellular layer, known as the trophectoderm, and send them for comprehensive laboratory analysis,” Dr Hiran explained. “The test evaluates all 46 chromosomes to confirm whether the embryo possesses a normal chromosomal count.”

Dr Hiran highlighted that identifying and selecting chromosomally normal embryos substantially elevates the overall success rate of IVF procedures, while minimizing the risk of pregnancy loss and ensuring better outcomes for patients facing severe fertility hurdles.

Since introducing embryo biopsy services approximately one and a half years ago, the Dar es Salaam-based center has conducted more than 800 genetic screenings. These interventions have yielded remarkable clinical results, assisting over 150 couples to successfully conceive, carry their pregnancies to full term, and deliver healthy babies.

For couples navigating repeated pregnancy losses, fertility experts stress that understanding the underlying genetic causes through comprehensive diagnostic tools like PGT-A offers actionable clarity, enabling prospective parents and their doctors to tailor effective treatment pathways toward building healthy families.
