Arusha. Tanzania is stepping up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), with the government urging investors to speed up hotel and accommodation projects to meet rising demand from visitors.

Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, said the government was inspecting tourism facilities in areas expected to receive visitors during the continental football tournament to assess the country’s readiness.

The inspection tour began in Kisarawe, Coast Region, before proceeding to Dar es Salaam and Arusha, where she visited Lake Duluti Nature Forest Reserve to assess ongoing hotel investments.

“We are continuing to inspect areas where Afcon 2027 matches will be played to assess our readiness. We are making good progress in our preparations,” she said.

At Lake Duluti, Dr Kijaji inspected two hotel projects at different stages of development. One investor expects to begin operations in early December this year, while another plans to open in February.

She said some visitors had already booked accommodation, making timely completion of the projects important as Tanzania prepares to host the tournament.

Dr Kijaji said the investments would also create wider economic opportunities, including employment for young people and markets for local farmers, livestock keepers and other suppliers.

“Once the hotels are completed and operational, we will need produce from our farmers, meat from livestock keepers and other supplies to serve our visitors,” she said.

She commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for supporting investment and promoting tourism, adding that local contractors were participating in the construction projects.

The minister also encouraged Tanzanian entrepreneurs to invest in tourism facilities, including tented camps, saying some projects could be completed within about four months, depending on their size and requirements.

She advised prospective investors to contact the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) for guidance on available opportunities in forest reserves and other designated areas.

Tanzania recorded approximately 5.9 million tourist arrivals in 2025, according to figures cited by Dr Kijaji. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s 2025 election manifesto targets eight million annual tourist arrivals by 2030.

She said preparations for Afcon 2027, alongside tourism promotion initiatives such as The Royal Tour and Amazing Tanzania, would help expand accommodation capacity and strengthen the sector beyond the tournament.
