Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has called on development partners to increase investment in skills, innovation and sustainable infrastructure to support the country’s long-term development ambitions under Vision 2050.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on October 23 at a ceremony marking the United Nations’ 81st anniversary, Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs Abdallah Ulega said achieving the vision would require stronger international cooperation and investment in people and institutions.

“We call upon our development partners to join hands with us in implementing our national priorities by investing in people, institutions, innovation, sustainable infrastructure and inclusive economic growth,” he said.

Mr Ulega said the government, development partners, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions and international organisations needed to work together to achieve the country’s development goals.

He stressed the importance of involving young people in the process, describing them as innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders whose participation was essential to national transformation.

He also called for greater access to education, skills training, finance, decent employment and leadership opportunities for women, saying removing barriers to their participation was critical to inclusive growth.

The minister reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to multilateralism, international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also called for reforms to make the United Nations more responsive to global challenges and more representative of its member states.

He said peace, stability and accountable institutions were essential to sustainable development, adding that Tanzania would continue working with the UN to advance its national priorities.

UN Resident Coordinator in Tanzania Susan Ngongi Namondo said development should be assessed not only by the progress achieved but also by how widely its benefits were shared.

“We keep asking not only how much progress we are making, but who is benefiting and who is being left out,” she said.

Ms Namondo urged stakeholders to ensure women and girls, young people, persons with disabilities, refugees and underserved communities were included in development initiatives. She also called for greater use of data and closer engagement with communities to identify inequalities and improve public services.

Under the theme “81 Years of the United Nations: Building a Future of Peace, Dignity and Sustainability for All”, she urged stakeholders to translate their commitments into tangible results.

Meanwhile, United Nations Association of Tanzania Director Ibrahim Bakari called for greater investment in youth employment and entrepreneurship, citing barriers to decent jobs, affordable finance and sustainable livelihoods.

He said young entrepreneurs also needed mentorship, business development support, market access and digital skills, noting that access to finance alone would not address their challenges.

Mr Bakari said young people should have a meaningful role in planning, budgeting and decision-making.

“A peaceful and prosperous nation cannot be built without the meaningful participation of its young people,” he said, adding that they should be able to influence how development priorities were designed, financed, implemented and evaluated.
