Police expose dangerous traffic violations

Dar es Salaam. Night-time police operations across Tanzania have exposed traffic violations, raising concerns over passenger safety during late-hour journeys.

The violations range from unlicensed drivers and overloaded buses to a lorry driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police reports.

On October 22, police in Kilimanjaro Region arrested a lorry driver, a national of a neighbouring country, who was travelling from Kenya towards Rusumo on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Regional Traffic Police Commander Nassoro Sisiwaya said legal action would be taken against the driver.

In Manyara Region, a bus driver was penalised for carrying excess passengers during a night operation in the early hours of October 20.

A separate operation at Kikatiti in Arusha Region targeted violations including driving after consuming alcohol and operating vehicles without reflective markings, which are important for visibility, particularly at night.

In Dodoma, an operation led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Desdery Rugimbana on October 10 inspected 134 vehicles, of which 24 had technical or legal violations.

In Masumbwe, Mbogwe District, Geita Region, police inspections on October 16 found two drivers operating without licences and three others using expired licences.

Officers also found buses carrying excess passengers. Those affected were refunded their fares and provided with alternative transport.

On October 16, Traffic Police Unit Commander SACP William Mkonda led another operation at Dumila in Kilosa District, Morogoro Region, where he boarded buses to educate drivers and passengers on road safety.

“Safe journeys begin with discipline, alertness and compliance with traffic laws. Our priority is to ensure passengers arrive safely, not simply to get them to their destinations quickly,” he said.

LATRA tests vehicle-monitoring system

The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) is testing a vehicle-monitoring system designed to detect violations and improve road safety.

LATRA communications head Salum Pazzy said the system receives data directly from devices installed in vehicles, replacing an arrangement that relied on information passing through service providers’ central systems.

He said cameras could monitor vehicle movement, passenger seating and potential risks, including drivers using mobile phones or showing signs of fatigue.

The system can issue warnings, while video footage and other information can be stored for investigations.

Mr Pazzy said LATRA also takes action against operators who carry excess passengers, charge fares above approved rates or allow passengers to sit on stools.

Experts call for sustained enforcement

Tanzania Road Safety Initiative director Maliki Barongo said persistent disregard for traffic laws required consistent enforcement and public education.

He said road safety efforts should address driver behaviour, vehicle conditions, pedestrian conduct and road infrastructure.

“The government has a responsibility to improve roads, review road signs and address dangerous locations to reduce the likelihood of crashes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tanzania Professional Drivers Institute deputy secretary Muhidini Sangoti said the organisation planned to meet drivers’ associations and the Traffic Police Unit commander to discuss measures to reduce road crashes ahead of the end-of-year travel period.

He said professional drivers needed appropriate training and valid licences, alongside strict adherence to traffic regulations.
