Tanzania-China trade set to exceed Sh31 trillion this year

Unguja. Trade between Tanzania and China is projected to exceed Sh31 trillion ($12 billion) this year, following a rise to Sh29.82 trillion ($11.28 billion) in 2025, as the two countries seek to expand economic cooperation and create more investment opportunities.

The partnership has also generated more than 150,000 jobs in Tanzania through Chinese investments across various sectors, according to figures presented by Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian.

The figures were highlighted on October 20, 2026, during a meeting between the ambassador and CCM Zanzibar Deputy Secretary General Abdi Mahmoud Abdi at the party’s headquarters in Kisiwandui, Zanzibar.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, education, infrastructure and economic development.

Ms Chen said the implementation of China’s zero-tariff policy for eligible Tanzanian exports, which took effect on May 1 this year, presented an opportunity for producers and entrepreneurs to expand their access to the Chinese market.

The policy is expected to improve market access for qualifying Tanzanian products, potentially benefiting Zanzibar’s producers of seaweed, spices and other agricultural products, provided they meet the required standards.

Ms Chen said the growth in bilateral trade demonstrated the potential for further economic cooperation, adding that China would continue supporting development projects, including roads and airports, to facilitate transport and investment.

“The increase in trade demonstrates the significant opportunities available for expanding economic cooperation. We pledge to continue supporting development projects, including road and airport construction, to facilitate transport and investment,” he said.

For his part, Mr Abdi said relations between the ruling parties of Tanzania and China had endured for more than 60 years, built on the friendship established by Tanzania’s founding President Julius Nyerere and former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

He said visits by CCM and government leaders to China had provided opportunities to study its development models and gain knowledge that could inform Tanzania’s development efforts.

Mr Abdi called for continued cooperation to create more opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania to access training and learn from China’s development experience.

“It is encouraging to see our colleagues continue to support us in achieving development. Many of us have had opportunities to visit China, learn about its current progress and see the many things you are doing in your country,” he said.
