Samia to inaugurate Sh700bn Government City on October 30

Dodoma. President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to inaugurate the Sh700 billion Government City at Mtumba in Dodoma on October 30, 2026, following the postponement of the ceremony after the death of her husband, Maalim Hafidh Ameir Hassan.

Chief Government Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, announced the new date in Dodoma on October 25.

The ceremony was initially scheduled for September 8 but was postponed following the death of Maalim Hafidh on September 7.

“The inauguration of the government buildings and infrastructure will take place on October 30, 2026. President Samia Suluhu Hassan will be the guest of honour,” Mr Msigwa said.

The project, which began in 2021 under the Sixth Phase Government, builds on infrastructure developed during the administration of the late President John Magufuli.

The government has invested about Sh700 billion in the complex, which comprises ministry offices, supporting infrastructure and digital communication systems.

Government Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, speaks to journalists in Dodoma on October 25, 2026.

The development includes 59 kilometres of tarmac roads and office buildings designed to accommodate government ministries and institutions. Some buildings have five or more floors.

According to Mr Msigwa, the facilities are intended to improve the working environment for public servants and enhance coordination and efficiency in public service delivery.

He said digital communication systems had reduced reliance on physical files and the transportation of documents between government offices.

“As Chief Government Spokesperson, I can assure you that no Tanzanian’s file should remain unattended. A file received in the morning can be responded to in the afternoon because documents now move through digital systems,” he said.

The systems allow government institutions to exchange official correspondence electronically, reducing the need to transport documents using vehicles and motorcycles.

Mr Msigwa said the project had attracted interest from more than 10 delegations from Africa and other parts of the world, which had visited Tanzania to learn from the development.

He also described the complex as an emerging tourist attraction in Dodoma, saying some visitors to the capital were including it in their itineraries.

The development coincides with improvements in transport links between Dodoma and Dar es Salaam following the introduction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Mr Msigwa said the railway had cut travel time between the two cities to about four hours.

The relocation of the government’s administrative operations to Dodoma was announced in 2016, reviving a plan that had remained largely unfulfilled for decades.
